Blepharoplasty

Is sagging skin above and below your eyelids making you appear more tired and older than you really are?
Upper and lower eyelid surgery can redefine the way you look and improve the way you feel about your appearance. Learn how Dr. Patricia Berbari can perform blepharoplasty surgery at our Gatineau, QC, practice to enhance your appearance...

How Does Eyelid Surgery Work?

By removing drooping skin either above or below the eye, your doctor comprehensively addresses signs of aging with only minimal scarring
With eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, Dr. Berbari can sculpt the skin on the upper and lower eyelids to help you achieve a more rested, alert facial appearance.

Other Candidacy Factors

Dr. Berbari requires all plastic surgery patients to undergo a comprehensive evaluation before determining which enhancement procedure best fits their needs and fulfills their cosmetic desires. In addition, older patients with vision conditions should undergo an eye examination by a specialist to detect potential complications such as dry eye or excessive tears. Candidates for eyelid surgery at our surgical centre serving Gatineau and Ottawa most commonly include patients who:

Desire an improvement in their facial appearance

Have sagging skin in their upper or lower eyelids

Are in good health and have healthy tissue surrounding their eyes and brow

Are non-smokers

Do not have serious eye diseases or severe eye conditions

Have realistic goals for their plastic surgery outcome

Asian Blepharoplasty

/

Dr. Berbari does not perform blepharoplasty on patients who are of Asian decent. Because the treatment required to produce outstanding results for these patients is especially complex, Dr. Berbari will refer these patients to a surgeon with the required expertise.

What to Expect during Blepharoplasty Treatment

Before performing surgery at our Gatineau plastic and cosmetic surgery clinic, Dr. Berbari will conduct a one-on-one consultation with you to determine the best way to achieve the results you desire.
The blepharoplasty procedure generally takes about one hour.
The blepharoplasty procedure generally takes about one hour.

Anesthesia

On the day of your surgery, Dr. Berbari administers general anesthesia to maintain your comfort throughout the cosmetic surgery procedure.

Incisions

During surgery, Dr. Berbari will make a small, discreet incision in your upper or lower eyelids to access the underlying fat and tissue.

Fat Removal or Redistribution

Next, Dr. Berbari will remove or redistribute fat in the lower or upper eyelids to create a smoother base for the overlying skin.

Tighten and Lift the Skin

Dr. Berbari may also tighten loose tissue and stretch the existing muscle during surgery to give the area around the eyes a lifted, firm appearance.

Remove Excess Skin

Finally, excess skin will be removed from the eyelids, producing results that are seamless and natural-looking.

Close Incisions

To complete this plastic surgical procedure, Dr. Berbari will close the incisions. After a brief recovery period at our clinic, you will be sent home to heal.

Complementary Procedures

Many patients undergoing blepharoplasty choose to combine their eyelid procedures with other forms of plastic surgery or with nonsurgical treatments. Combining procedures can help rejuvenate the entire face. Blepharoplasty can be combined with the following procedures:

Face Lift

To match the tightened, youthful effects of eyelid surgery, many patients combine blepharoplasty with a face lift for an overall youthful transformation. Blepharoplasty only targets and rejuvenates the excess skin around the eyes, leaving the rest of the patient's face untouched. A face lift may benefit patients seeking more comprehensive results.

Injectables

Injectables offer a non-invasive way to tackle wrinkles and fine lines around a patient's face. Unlike blepharoplasty surgery which creates results that last for years, injectables are a temporary solution. We offer botulinum toxin, fat transfer, and dermal fillers.

Laser Neck Lift

Similar to your eyelids, the neck has thin skin, and as such is prone to the effects of aging. If you want the positive effects of a neck lift without more surgery, our office offers laser neck lifts that are entirely non-invasive and produce stunning results.

Brow Lift

If a sagging brow is contributing to the drooping of the upper eyelids, blepharoplasty alone may not produce the desired results. In this case, a brow lift may be necessary to effectively lift the upper eyelids and address droopy brows.

Risks and Complications

The benefits of blepharoplasty are clear, but as in all plastic and cosmetic surgical procedures, there is a risk of:

The removal of too much skin may result in an ectropion (excessive stretching of the lower eyelid).

Bleeding and infection may occur.

In very rare cases, a hematoma (build-up of blood) behind the eye may cause blurred vision. This complication does not occur without symptoms, however.

A patient may complain of extreme pain and his or her vision may be clouded. While this is a medical emergency, the problem can be quickly dealt with by a trusted medical professional.
