"We can perform lip augmentation using dermal fillers or implants. [...] No matter if you choose to undergo lip augmentation with injectables or your own fat, you can enjoy outstanding outcomes from a relatively simple procedure."

Lip Augmentation with Injectables

Lip augmentation using an injectable dermal filler offers a minimally invasive way to enhance your lips. During treatment, we will inject a special material into your lips to increase their size. We can perform lip augmentation using hyaluronic acid, a natural compound found in human connective tissue that can boost the volume of lips for up to one year.

Dr. Berbari will review the advantages of each dermal filler during your initial consultation to determine the type that can best achieve your goals. No matter which dermal filler you select, the entire lip augmentation procedure should be completed in less than half an hour. It is highly recommended to avoid blood thinners like anti-inflammatory medication (Advil, Motrin, etc.), garlic, ginger, and alcohol to prevent bruising.

Lip Augmentation with Your Own Fat

If you are seeking the most dramatic, long-lasting results possible, Dr. Berbari may recommend lip augmentation with your own fat. During this procedure, she will make tiny incisions at the edges of your lips and inject the fat she has suctioned previously and treated by washing and centrifugation from your own abdomen. Fat harvest is also done under local anesthesia in a sterile environment through a tiny incision in the belly button. Everything is done under local anesthetic with minimal discomfort.

The advantage of choosing fat transfer is that you can have a larger volume injected in one session, the result is more uniform in that there is less risk of getting lumps or foreign body reactions, the feel is more natural and it lasts longer.

Risks and Complications

Lip augmentation is considered very safe. However, each form of treatment does pose certain risks. The risks of lip augmentation with an injectable include:

  • Infection
  • Inflammation
  • Bruising and even hematoma (excessive bleeding)
  • Soreness or aching, which typically dissipates quickly

The risks of lip augmentation with your own fat include:

  • Infection
  • More swelling that may last up to two weeks
  • A low percentage of people digest the fat quickly and the procedure needs to be repeated
  • More expensive
  • Bruising

Recovery

The standard healing periods for both types of lip augmentation are relatively short. After surgical lip augmentation with your own fat, most patients return to work within a week and completely recover within three weeks. You may experience swelling, bruising, and numbness during this period. Patients who opt for injectable augmentation can typically resume normal activities directly after treatment, although their lips may feel sore for several days.
