Eliminate Puffy Circles from Beneath the Eyes with Lower Eyelid Surgery By Patricia Berbari on January 30, 2015

Middle-aged couple with youthful facial featuresPuffy, loose skin around the eyes can have a significant effect on a person’s overall appearance. Many people who have these bags of skin beneath the eyes find that they are constantly asked how they’re feeling, or told that they look tired. While there are creams and products available that promise to eliminate these under eye circles, few provide the dramatic results that most of our patients are looking for. Plastic surgeon Patricia Berbari offers her Gatineau patients lower eyelid surgery for puffy circles and loose skin beneath the eyes. Eyelid surgery can smooth and tighten the skin around the eyes, giving patients a refreshed, alert, and youthful appearance. This procedure can make patients look and feel years younger, and the results are long-lasting, making this an excellent option for those who are looking for results greater than those that can be achieved with a bottle of lotion.

Candidates

To ensure that patients receive surgical results that are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also free of complications, Dr. Berbari is particular when determining whether a patient is an ideal candidate for plastic surgery. In the case of lower eyelid surgery, patients need to be in generally good health and free of complications that may increase the risk of surgery. Eyelid surgery candidates should also be non-smokers or prepared to give up smoking in the weeks prior to and following surgery. Because alterations will be made so close to the eyes, it is important that patients have good eye health and be free of any eye diseases or infections. If all of these conditions are met, lower eyelid surgery may be an excellent option for addressing the following cosmetic concerns:

  • Puffy lower eyelid skin
  • Droopy bags of skin beneath the eyes
  • Creased, wrinkled skin around the lower eyelids
  • A generally worn down or tired appearance

The Procedure

Patient comfort is one of Dr. Berbari’s top priorities, so lower eyelid surgery will be performed with the patient under general anesthesia. Dr. Berbari begins surgery by making an incision in the skin of the lower eyelid. Dr. Berbari is careful in placing this incision in the natural creases of the eyes so that patients are left with a scar that is virtually undetectable. Through this incision, Dr. Berbari can remove excess fat and skin from the lower eyelid to eliminate puffy circles or bags of skin. The muscle may also be stretched out and any loose tissue tightened to create a firmer, smoother appearance. When Dr. Berbari is finished with alterations, the incision will be closed and patients can begin recovery. Initial results may be difficult to detect due to swelling around the eyes, but as healing progresses, patients will notice a dramatic change in the appearance of the lower eyelids.
