Breast Augmentation before and after Pregnancy By Patricia Berbari on March 06, 2013

Ottawa Breast Implants PregnancyBreast augmentation can be an excellent way for patients with small breasts, sagging breasts, and misshaped breasts to achieve the feminine contours they desire. Patients who are unhappy with the shape, feel, or size of their breasts may benefit from breast augmentation with breast implants. That being said, many women have concerns when it comes to breast implants and pregnancy.

Breast Implants and Pregnancy: Are They Safe?

The safety of breast implants during pregnancy is a common concern among patients. Thankfully, breast implants will not affect a woman’s chances of becoming pregnant, nor do they affect the development of a fetus. It is also safe to breastfeed if you have breast implants. While it is safe to breastfeed with breast implants, certain breast implant incisions may affect a patient’s ability to produce breast milk.

Breast Implants and Pregnancy: Physical Changes

Women should expect some changes to occur in the breasts as a result of pregnancy. Typically, hormonal changes that take place during pregnancy cause the breasts to become fuller and larger in size. While it is impossible to predict the individual and unique changes that will occur, most women experience an increase of one to three cup sizes during pregnancy. Fortunately, pregnancy does not affect the volume or shape of the breast implant structure in any way. Your breast implants will remain unchanged during pregnancy. While this is true, as a result of the changes in the breasts that naturally occur during pregnancy, the position of the breast implants may not be as aesthetically pleasing or as natural as before these changes took place. Because of this, revision breast augmentation surgery may be recommended after pregnancy to our patients in Ottawa. Breast implants, pregnancy, and breastfeeding can all have an effect on the breasts.

It is incredibly common for women to be unhappy with the shape, appearance, and feel of their breasts after giving birth. Sagging breasts are a common problem for many women after pregnancy and breastfeeding. In fact, many women chose to undergo breast augmentation to restore the size and shape of their breasts after pregnancy. Breast augmentation, breast lift, and tummy tuck are procedures that typically make up a “mommy makeover” treatment. Even if you have undergone breast augmentation in the past, if you are currently unhappy with the appearance, feel, or shape of your breasts, you may benefit from a mommy makeover. If you are suffering from sagging breasts after pregnancy, you may benefit from a breast lift. While the size and volume of breast implants remain unchanged through pregnancy and breastfeeding, patients may still experience some sagging in the breasts. This sagging can cause the breast implants to no longer be in an optimal or natural-looking position on the chest.

During your personal consultation with Ottawa plastic surgeon Patricia Berbari, she will assess your needs, discuss your goals, and then customize a treatment plan to best help you achieve the results you desire. Ottawa breast augmentation patients who are no longer satisfied with the appearance of their breasts after pregnancy may consider undergoing revision surgery. Your unique contours, needs, and goals will determine which treatments are included in your customized treatment plan.
