The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) publishes plastic surgery statistics each year, highlighting the popularity of plastic surgery year over year and which procedures are most commonly performed. In 2018, breast augmentation with implants was once again the most popular procedure performed by ASPS member surgeons.

The following statistics were published by the ASPS in 2018. A total of 1,811,740 cosmetic surgeries performed. The most popular plastic surgery procedures included:

• Breast augmentation (313,735)
• Eyelid surgery (206,529)
• Liposuction (258,558)
• Rhinoplasty (213,780)
• Tummy tuck (130,081)
• Facelift (121,531)
• Breast lift (109,638)

Breast Augmentation Continues to Be the Most Popular

There were 313,735 breast augmentation procedures performed in 2018. The year before, 300,378 breast augmentation procedures were performed in the United States.

Since the year 2000, when 212,500 procedures were performed, there has been a 48 percent increase in the total number of breast augmentation procedures performed in the United States.

Other Breast Procedures

Breast lift surgery ranked in as the seventh most popular plastic surgery procedure overall, and it was also the second most popular breast-related procedure. A total of 109,638 breast lift surgeries were performed in 2018, and 105,219 procedures were performed the year before. Since 2000, there has been a 108 percent increase in the number of breast lifts performed.

The third most common breast-related cosmetic surgery in 2018 was breast reduction (43,591), followed by breast implant removal (29,236) and breast reduction in men (24,753).

The Biggest Increases in Popularity Since Last Year

Between 2017 and 2018, several plastic procedures saw a significant increase in popularity.

Hair transplantation saw the largest increase at 18 percent, followed by buttock augmentation with fat grafting (up 19 percent), breast implant removal (up 6 percent), liposuction and thigh lift (up 5 percent), and breast augmentation, breast lift, and surgical lip augmentation (up 4 percent).

The Popularity of Non-surgical Procedures

A total of 15,909,931 minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures were performed in 2018. The most popular of these include Botox (7,437,378), soft tissue filler (2,676,970), chemical peel (1,384,327), laser hair removal (1,077,490), and microdermabrasion (709,413).

Reconstructive Surgery

A total of 5,805,880 reconstructive surgeries were performed in 2018. The most commonly performed procedures were:

• Tumor removal (4,462,519)
• Non-facial laceration repair (253,447)
• Maxillofacial surgery (204,521)
• Scar Revision (182,250)
• Breast reconstruction (101,657)
