Dr. Patricia Berbari discusses the process of a breast augmentation procedure. She goes over the different options available in implant types, shapes, and sizes. She talks about the importance of choosing the right implants for individual's body types.
When a woman comes and asks for breast augmentation, I start by listening to what her main concern is. Most of my patients come after pregnancies, or after weight loss, and most of the time they want to regain the shape they had before, when they were younger, or before they had their babies, or having breast fed. So it's very important to talk about the shape of the breast before talking about the volume. Of course, some people, some women want to enhance the volume of their breast, and this is a different category of discussion we can have after.
I offer saline breast augmentation and gel breast augmentation. I have to explain well to the patient what is best in their case because, depending on the shape of their breast, the width of their shoulders, we can choose one or the other implant.
We have different shape. We have round ones. We have high profile, low profile, teardrop shape, and now the gel is very safe. We have the gummy bear, commonly named gel implants. This is cohesive gel so even if the implant is cut open with a knife it doesn't leak, and they have made many studies to prove that this gel is not bad for the system if it breaks or if it leaks. So patients can be reassured with the use of the gel implants. More and more patients actually ask for them now.
So once we start the consultation, I can show the patient pictures, and I can explain to the patient what to choose, and the decision is made with the patient. She can even try some of the implants, take them home, discuss with her husband, with her mother, with her friends, and they sometimes come with two or three other people before they make their final decision.
