Prepare for Your Procedure with Our Pre-op Eyelid Surgery Instructions

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a simple cosmetic procedure that can permanently eliminate sagging, drooping skin. This procedure can give you a more energized and youthful appearance. To ensure you are prepared for your procedure, Dr. Patricia Berbari will provide you with a set of pre-op eyelid surgery instructions. This ensures your blepharoplasty at our Gatineau, QC office goes smoothly, and it reduces your risk of complications after your procedure.

Two-Plus Weeks before Surgery

Two or more weeks before your scheduled surgery, Dr. Berbari will instruct you to stop taking all non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), including aspirin and ibuprofen. These medications can inhibit your body’s ability to form blood clots, which can lead to excessive bleeding during or after surgery.

You must also quit smoking at least two weeks before (as well as two weeks following) your procedure. Smoking can hinder your healing and can also lead to visible scarring. We can help you find a cessation program so you can successfully quit short- or long-term.

During this time, you must avoid any sun damage. We recommend using sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to provide you with the maximum amount of protection.

You will need another adult to escort you home following your surgery. We recommend setting this up in advance and arranging for someone to stay with you the rest of the day after your surgery.

24 Hours before Surgery

The night before your surgery, you must not consume any food or drinks after midnight. This includes water. You may wish to take this time to gather any items to prepare for your recovery. Our office will provide you with a list of suggested medications and items that can help make your recovery more comfortable. You will also receive a call from our office the day before your surgery to confirm your scheduled arrival and procedure times. This can help you coordinate with your escort to ensure you arrive on time.

Day of Surgery

You must continue to avoid all food and drinks. If you have medications you must take in the morning and they have been cleared to take by Dr. Berbari, you may take them with a small sip of water. We recommend wearing loose-fitting clothing, and a shirt that buttons or zips down the front so you do not have to pull your shirt over your head.

We recommend leaving all jewelry at home. You should not wear any eye makeup or any other facial makeup. If you typically wear contacts, we request that you wear glasses on the day of your surgery.

Please ensure you and your escort arrive on time so that our team can properly prepare you for surgery. We will give all post-operative instructions to your escort. You should make sure your escort is prepared to wait up to three hours.
