There are many different ways that you can enhance the overall appearance of your frame. One of the most common and most popular options for advanced body contouring is the tummy tuck surgery, which helps patients achieve a much trimmer, slimmer, and more appealing waistline. When you meet with a plastic surgeon, you'll be able to discuss all of your body contouring options in greater detail, allowing you to look your very best.

Right now, we'd like to consider some of the basics with regard to tummy tuck surgery, with a special focus on the compression garment that is worn after the surgery is performed.

About Tummy Tuck Surgery

Some basics about the tummy tuck first.

Tummy tuck surgery (abdominoplasty) is performed to make the stomach area look much more appealing after a patient has lost a lot of weight or has given birth. This means removing loose skin and adjusting the underlying structures of the abdominal area in order to reduce sagging and eliminate stretch marks.

What is a compression garment?

The recovery period following tummy tuck surgery will require patients to (among other things) refrain from strenuous physical activity, monitor their surgical drains, and wear a compression garment. The compression garment is a special undergarment that provides support for the muscles and any tissues that are treated through surgery. The garments themselves are made of breathable blends of spandex and other stretchable fabrics.

Why is a compression garment so important?

Many patients who wear compression garments report that they feel less post-operative discomfort and feel greater peace of mind by having the garment in place. While there is no scientific data of the benefits of wearing a compression/binder garment, patient anecdotes suggest that the compression garment will help reduce swelling and improve the overall healing experience.

What happens if a compression garment is not worn?

There is no scientific evidence that not wearing a compression garment after surgery will lead to negative side effects or complications. In fact, if a compression garment is too tight, it can lead to soreness and discomfort rather than alleviating it, which is why it's so important to find a binder that fits properly. Each surgical treatment and post-surgical recovery procedure needs to be customized to the patient.

During your consultation, we will be sure to go over all of the risks and benefits related to compression garments and whether or not they would be best for your situation.

How long will tummy tuck patients wear their compression garments?

As alluded to above, this will vary from patient to patient based on their needs. In general, patients can expect to wear their compression garment for about two weeks after surgery, with a secondary compression garment likely for the two weeks after that. This will be discussed during the consultation process, and it's important that you follow the instructions for post-operative care to the letter.
